Friends of the Coorong Milestones
The inaugural meeting of Friends of the Coorong was held in the Meningie Institute on November 22nd 1987. 44 were present. Our inaugural patron was Mr Colin Thiele, Author of Storm Boy.
1988 – logo designed by David Robertson of Belair
1994 – awarded “Best Logo” at the Friends of Parks forum
1988 – members help with the pelican banding project
1992 – awarded “Best Wildlife Project” at the Friends of Parks forum
1990 – Colossal Coorong Clean-up
1990 – awarded “Best Community Project” at the Friends of Parks forum
1991 – Harry Wallace makes a herbarium for the Coorong
1996 – awarded “Best Public Education Project” at the Friends of parks forum
1992 – adopted the Lakes Nature Trail at Salt Creek
1992 – awareded “Best Trail” at the Friends of parks forum
1996 – adopted the Mark Point Mill historic site
1999 – awarded best heritage project at the Friends of parks forum
2011 – completed the restoration of the site, awarded the inaugural “Best Forum Display” at the Friends of Parks forum
1992 – individual award made to David and Margaret Dadd
1994 – SA Ranger of the Year awarded to Phil Hollow
1995 – individual award made to Harry and Margaret Wallace
1995 – awarded “Best Newsletter” – then edited by Marie Sinnott
1997 – SA Volunteers of the Year awarded to Harry and Margaret Wallace
1999 – SA Ranger of the Year awarded to Steve Gilbert
1999 – most supportive staff person to Friends of Parks awarded to Joanne Flavel
2003 – “Best Friends” medals awarded to Elaine Lawson and Vicki Natt
2003 – individual award made to Leta padman at Friends of the Parks forum
2005 – individual award made to john and Rosemary Edkins
1999 – gained a grant for the Cantara Conservation Plan
2001 – first Open House at Cantara

2005 – awarded “Best Heritage Project” at the Friends of Parks forum
2006 – fossicking day at Cantara
1990 – Leta Padmans “Tales of the Coorong” first printed
1993 – Jenny Harvey’s memorial erected at Mark Point
1995 – Leta padman’s “More Tales of the Coorong” first printed
1998 – hosted the 14th annual Friends of the Parks forum at Meningie
1999 – bus trip to Naracoorte Caves and Bool Lagoon
2000 – open day at Parnka Point
2001 – heritage dig at Chinaman’s Well
2004 – visit to Butcher’s Gap and Little Dip Conservation Parks
2005 – Meet the Waders Festival at Parnka Point
2006 – Wetland and Waders Festival at Parnka Point
2007 – Wetland and Waders Festival at Salt Creek
2007 – 20th Anniversary celebrations at Pelican Point
2008 – Leta Padman’s “Tales of the lakes and Coorong” first printed.
2008 – Wetland and Waders Festival at 42 Mile Crossing
2010 – erected Pip Williams’ memorial seat at Parnka Point
2010 – state-wide Fairy Tern survey
2012 – Coorong Walking Group formed
